Tea Party Anniversary – Feb. 27, 2010
Speech by Dan McBride
My name is Dan McBride. I am a concerned taxpayer just like you. I have been working most of my life trying to educate my fellow Americans about how we are losing our freedoms. My parents were active patriots, and when I was 15 years old I worked for Goldwater for President. That was 1964. So when Carolyn asked me if I wouldn’t mind saying a few words about what has motivated me to keep plugging away all these years, I gladly accepted.
I have known Carolyn Guillot for a number of years now. Carolyn is the Tea Party coordinator for this area and is the organizers of today’s rally. I daresay that if we could clone Carolyn and put a few Carolyns in each congressional district across the country our problems would be over. She is one of the hardest working patriots I have ever met. Let’s give Carolyn a well-deserved round of applause. Thank you, Carolyn!
On my way over here today I heard on the news that Gov. Schwarzenegger has come up with a new tax. It is called a Rally Tax. It seems some State bureaucrat came up with the bright idea to tax any rallies held on public lands. Sort of a “use tax.” Of course we here are all opposed to government subsidies, so how can we not support it?
Actually, if you stop and think about it, it’s not a bad idea — from a politician’s point of view, that is. Here’s the scenario: Some politician proposes a new tax bill. The Tea Party goes into action and arranges to protest the new tax bill. They hold a Protest Rally on public property. The Tea Party gets taxed even if the law never gets passed. So, in effect, the politicians finally have figured out a way to collect taxes just by PROPOSING a new tax! It’s the political equivalent of a perpetual motion machine. The more new tax laws they propose, the more revenue they collect!
A perpetual motion machine? How about a perpetual law-making machine? Isn’t that what our legislatures have become? Both at the Federal and State level? Isn’t that why we are here today? Because we are fed up? If government is a perpetual law-making machine, constantly making new laws curtailing our liberties, we must be perpetually on guard protecting those liberties.
So what do we need to do to protect our liberties? I’d like to tell you some of the things that have kept me an active patriot over the years.
Being an ex-Army man I’d like to put things in military terms.
Are there any military veterans here today? Let’s see a show of hands. Any Vietnam War veterans here?
One thing all military people are taught is the importance of knowing your enemy. If you don’t do a good job of learning all you can about your enemy, you are going to lose the war. Make no mistake about it, ladies and gentlemen, we are at war. It’s a battle between tyranny and liberty, is it not? Are we not losing our liberties incrementally? Doesn’t each new piece of legislation seem to reduce our liberties? Isn’t getting frisked at the airport a clear violation of the 4th Amendment which prohibits unwarranted searches and seizures?
This war is not a fighting war with real bullets, but the end result is the same. If we lose this war, we lose our freedom.
Look at Europe. They now have a European Union president. National sovereignty is a thing of the past. That’s where we are headed. Our job as Tea Party members is to head ’em off at the pass!
What is the best way to do that? Edmund Burke said it best: “The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.”
Anybody who has pulled guard duty in the military knows how hard it is to be constantly on the alert. However, the greater the danger, the easier it is to remain alert.
As we learn more about what is really going on in the world today, we begin to feel the danger and become more alert. Isn’t that why we are here today? We feel threatened and we want to do something about it.
Do you see where I am going with this? All of us here today, somehow or in some way, has obtained information that has upset us and inspired us to come here to this Tea Party rally. It’s that simple. In order to remain motivated in the freedom fight, we simply must take the time and effort to keep educating ourselves to what is really going on in this country.
This education has to be ongoing and needs to be done on two levels. Let’s call these two levels the foundation level and the current level.
The foundation level consists of educating ourselves in the fundamentals of freedom. The best place to start is to read and study the Constitution. The Constitution limits what our government is authorized to do. Familiarity with the Constitution helps us to monitor our elected representatives to see if they are upholding their sworn duty to abide by the Constitution.
Another book that should be required reading for all Americans is the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx, which is basically a “how to” book for would-be tyrants. Let me just read from the list of ten planks that Marx says are needed to destroy a free enterprise system and replace it with socialism:
#2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
#3. Abolition of all rights of inheritance.
#5. Establishment of a central bank.
#10. Free education for all children in public schools.
After reading that list, do we still have the right to call ourselves a Republic?
There are many good books available that will give you a rock-solid foundation and make you a very effective patriot.
Just like in the military, we patriots have to deal with the day-to-day skirmishes — things like keeping up with current legislation, discussions with our friends and co-workers, things like that. Therefore, we must stay informed at the “current level.
There are lots of sources of good current information out there, especially on the web — not MSNBC, ABC, and CBS.
In summary, then, what we need to do is keep ourselves informed as to what is going on. This in turn will keep us motivated to do several things:
- Keep active in the Tea Party
- It will help us get our friends and neighbors involved because we need all the help we can get.
- And we will be better able to keep tabs on our legislators — and keep them on the straight and narrow path of limited government.
Education and truth: If we have any hope of restoring our great Republic, then education should be our total strategy, and truth our only weapon.
Please continue to educate yourselves so that you will stay in the fight. Do it for the kids.
